Dave Samson on the Principles of Crisis Communications

June 16, 2016

This week I’m sharing excerpts from an interview with Dave Samson, General Manager of Public Affairs at Chevron Corporation. Dave is chairman of the Arthur W. Page Society, the preeminent international association of senior communications and public affairs executives.

A few highlights:

  • “Be transparent, tell the truth, and tell people what you know when you know it.”
  • “…Being timely allows us to define and own the narrative from the outset.”
  • “A crisis has operational issues, reputational issues, and legal implications. Depending on the crisis, not all of those [factors] are always created equal.”
